Tips for Getting Around St. Croix

Many people avoid renting a car on St. Croix because they’re worried about driving on the island. As long as you’re mindful of the unique conditions and rules of the road, you should be okay.

  • Watch for potholes - Many roads on St. Croix aren’t in the best condition, so look out for potholes and bumps. You’ll notice many drivers going around potholes, so if you see someone in the wrong lane, that’s why. Sometimes, this is necessary to save your car from damage.

  • Drive on the left side of the road - Unlike the US mainland, we drive on the left side in the Virgin Islands. While it may seem unusual at first, most drivers get the hang of this relatively quickly. Think “keep left” while driving and cautiously look both ways when approaching an intersection, and you should be okay!

  • Understand common courtesy - The rules on the road are a bit different. Honking and flashing lights usually mean “go ahead” or “thank you.” Crucians often let people turn in front of them, so don’t let this confuse you, and return the favor when it’s safe to.

  • Be mindful while driving - It goes without saying you need to be extra mindful on the roads since St. Croix driving is a bit different. Keep your phone away, don’t drink and drive, and pay attention to other drivers.
